Heart failure is the leading cause of hospitalization in people over 65 years old.1 The cause of heart failure is none other than a weak heart muscle. When the heart becomes weak the blood moves at a slower rate, slowly starving the rest of the body’s cells of oxygen and nutrients. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

The primary function of Coenzyme Q10 is to produce cellular energy. It accomplishes this task by passing electrons along the electron transport chain.

When a cell has enough oxygen and CoQ10 available, it produce energy through a process called aerobic respiration via the electron transport chain. When energy is produced this way, there is a net gain of 34 adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecules. ATP is the equivalent of cellular energy.

Under low oxygen conditions or when CoQ10 levels are low, cells are forced to produce energy though a process called lactic acid fermentation. Lactic acid fermentation produces only 2 net ATP.

That is 17 times less energy!

As you can believe, this results in a significant cellular energy shortage. This energy shortage leads to reduced cell function and a wide range of potentially fatal illnesses. According to Dr. Karl Folkers, a 25% deficiency in the body’s CoQ10 levels is enough to cause illness, while a deficiency of 75% of more can lead to death.2

Creatine and Phosphocreatine

Creatine helps to supply energy to all cells in the body by increasing the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), aka cellular energy. The heart has a large demand for creatine because it is the most important and powerful muscle in the body. Its job doesn’t stop, even when you’re resting. It is no surprise to discover that heart has ample amounts of creatine.

Muscle efficiency is directly related to creatine concentration. Studies have found that patients with chronic heart failure have low levels of creatine in their hearts. Creatine has the ability to increase muscle stores of phosphocreatine which increases the muscle’s ability to maintain higher energy production for longer periods of time. This only happens when Creatine Kinase (CK) levels are sufficient.

Creatine consumption has been shown to:

  • improve the physiological response to resistance exercise
  • increase the maximal force production of muscle in both men and women

Enzymes Found in Heart

Creatine Kinase (CK)

Creatine Kinase (CK) catalyzes the conversion to creatine into phosphocreatine. It is found in high concentrations in the heart. This enzyme plays a key role in the chemical reaction necessary for the heart muscle to quickly generate energy. Phosphocreatine is higher-energy molecule that is able to regenerate ATP at a rapid rate when the heart is under higher energy demand.

There are three forms of CK called isozymes. Of the three isozymes, only one is found in large concentrations in heart muscle with only minimal amounts found anywhere else in the body. Blue River Herbs’s Grass-Fed Heart contains this isozyme of Creatine Kinase.

Aspartate Transaminase / Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase (SGOT)

Most people don’t realize that their body is the greatest recycling machine. By now, most of us have heard the saying “Reuse, Renew, Recycle”. Well, the body reuses proteins all the time. I mean, it spent a bunch of energy to get the amino acids (building blocks) in the first place, then to transport them to where they were needed, and lastly a whole lot more energy to organize them into proteins. Wouldn’t throwing them away be a waste?

Well, that’s where aspartate transaminase comes in. It is found in the heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas and catalyzes a reaction that is crucial for both the destruction and creation of proteins. When a protein no longer functions properly or is no longer needed, aspartate transaminase will step in to renew and recycle those amino acids.

Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH)

The highest concentrations of lactate dehydrogenase are found in the heart, skeletal muscle, liver, kidney, brain and red blood cells. It converts muscle lactic acid into pyruvic acid and back. This is a critical reaction in the metabolic process that ultimately produces ATP.

LDH works to prevent muscle failure and fatigue in a two ways. First, it promotes energy (ATP) production. Second, the production and removal of lactate from the cell by LDH acts as a buffer to decrease muscle acidosis. Muscle acidosis is felt as aches and fatigue after a long workout. Having a substantial supply of LDH will ward off fatigue by enhancing this buffer effect.

Collagen and Elastin

Collagen and elastin are two proteins found in the middle layer of your skin, called the dermis. Collagen is a structural protein that gives shape to the skin, helps your skin to stay youthful and supple, warding off fine lines and wrinkles.

Elastin, as the name implies, imparts elasticity to the skin. It helps skin to return to its original position and shape when it is poked or pinched. Too little elastin contributes to wrinkles and leathery skin. Together, collagen and elastin keep your skin healthy and youthful.

Heart has an ample amount of both collagen and elastin. Just think, the heart expands and contracts about 108,000 times in a single day!

L-Carnosine / L-Carnitine / Alpha-Lipoic Acid

L-carnosine, L-carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid are also found in heart. Studies have shown each of these nutrients to possess anti-oxidation as well as anti-aging properties. Tissue L-carnosine and L-carnitine levels are known to decrease with age.19,20

Atrial Natriuretic Peptide

The atria of the heart produce, store and secrete a unique protein-hormone called atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). ANP is involved in the homeostatic control of blood pressure. It helps to regulate body water, sodium, potassium and fat tissue. It is primarily released in response to high blood volume and begins a cascade which functions to lower the blood pressure.


Myoglobin is the primary iron- and oxygen-carrying pigment of muscle tissues. It is related to hemoglobin, which binds iron and oxygen in the blood. High concentrations of myoglobin in muscle cells serve as an oxygen reserve for times of low oxygen supply. This allows the cells to continue to produce ample energy under conditions of stress. Being the most important muscle of the body, the heart contains and benefits from a plentiful supply of myoglobin.
